Knit a blue square tonight!

I'm cross-posting this with the yahoo group because my emails always seem to get delayed on yahoo.

I saw on the new Warming Grace weblog that they really need some blue 5" squares for Grace's little boyfriend that's very sick. It's so sad, he's terminal and they want to get this blanket out to him asap. I knit up a few squares last night but they're trying to get 64 together immediately!

So I had an idea. Tonight I'm going to bring several skeins of blue yarn - some variegated, some cotton, some wool. I'm also going to bring my 365 stitches calendar and a bunch of washcloth patterns - that's where I've been getting stitch ideas. If you bring a size 6, 7, or 8 needle and a tape measure we could each knit up a square for Justin! They don't care what stitch it is as long as it's cotton or wool and 5" square. I'll even sew the ends in and block them all when we're done. You could bring whatever blue yarn you'd like of course.

I hope this isn't obnoxious but I thought it would be a meaningful way to spend our last snb with Beverly :)

Does anyone else want to make it as a summer a-long project, like we did (well, I didn't finish, ok, whatever) for the Jaywalkers? Village Wools has the pattern, and if you haven't seen their koigu selection lately, you owe it to yourself!

Warming Grace

Hey Girls (and guys) and just joined a project called Warming Grace. Cynthia, who has the blog Two Wooden Sticks has a 5- yr- old niece named Grace. Grace has Leukemia and Cynthia would like to make a blanket for her and other children suffering from cancer. She is asking people to knit a pink, 5in square in any stitch you like. She will sew the squares into blankets. The yarn cannot be acrylic, it must be soft wool or cotton. I will be happy to donate the yarn (I'm thinking some soft Manos) if anyone else would like to knit a square. Just let me know.

I wanted to say a very heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone at last night's meeting...

Thanks to all of you WONDERFUL WOMEN, you turned one of the worst days I have had in a long time into one of the BEST!!! I cannot begin to express the appreciation I have for each and every one of you and how blessed I truly feel to have the opportunity to have had all of you in my life!!! The birthday cake was unexpected and the card is now hanging up in my cube to remind me of all of the love and support I was lucky enough to get from you last night :-) Yes, tears still come to my eyes today remembering how ALL of you helped me out...

You all gave me a wonderful gift last night by just being there and experiencing your company... I hope that someday I can pay each and every one of you back!!!!

Scraps of Sock Yarn wanted

While looking on Lolly's blog to see what was doing re: Project Spectrum, I came across Major Knitter's contest. She's collecting scraps of extra sock yarn to use to make knit notes (they're cute!). She'll donate half of the proceeds from selling the cards to the Jackson Recovery Centers in Iowa, which her parents started as a teen rehab center.

I'm going to send a few skeins of Knitpicks landscape that are gathering dust (I only have one of the different colorways...not enough to make a pair of socks!).

Each ball--at least 2 yards--enters the sender (one ball, one entry--get the picture?) into a contest for nifty prizes. Here's my offer: if you have scraps of sock yarn you want to send, put them in a ziplock baggy with your contact information (name, email, blog addy). Bring them to me on Tuesday at SnB, and I'll send one package over to her on Wednesday morning.

Mardi Gras UFOs

As I was pawing through one of my stash baskets, I discovered my oldest UFO: an intarsia vest that I had knit for my ex-husband in colors that now make me cringe a bit. I had been knitting for about a year when I started it, and it's not bad, if you don't mind turquoise. You know my gauge issues. Well, before I added the edging around the entire thing, I had F. try it on. It maybe would fit a 7-year-old. I never finished the edges, although I'm proud to tell you that I did weave in the gabillion and seven ends.

So, upon the sight of this object, I thought that I should really finish it. After the Jaywalkers, of course. Although I'm not a practicing anything right now, Lent begins next Wednesday. I've decided that one thing I will do during that time is to finish this UFO, maybe a few others, all of which seem to need just a little bit of time.

Anyone want to join me on the UFO project? I thought that in celebration of Mardi Gras on 2/28 we could bring in our oldest UFO's to show off. Then, sometime soon, show them again as FO's.

Any seven-year-olds who want a vest?!

Flying Star

Hello! No one's posted here in a while so I thought I'd do one.

Why don't we discuss Flying Star's menu? I always have a hard time deciding because it's hard to see everything up on the wall. I get stressed because there are people behind me so I end up getting the same things every week. So let's discuss what's been good and what hasn't.

The egg salad sandwich I got last week kind of made me sick. That might be my body's weird reaction to egg or stress though because it tasted fine.
I love their hummus nosh that's always good and just enough for a snack but not too much.
I've also had the ABC Patty Melt several times - odd with the bacon and avocado but good.
The mac and cheese is wonderfully cheesy and carbolicious.
I don't like the pot pie. I joke with Cody about it being chicken soup with a big premade flaky hat.
The grilled cheese is pretty good too.

Not exactly vegan or vegetarian fare, I know, I'll probably move towards salads as it gets warmer but right now I'm sticking to the hot things.

What about you guys?

So, my ol' eyes are getting tired. I know I saw a schematic online SOMEWHERE that shows exactly where to measure the shoulders. I'm making this as a swap for a small knitting bag (a designated sock bag, perchance), and I want the lovely recipient to get a good fit. Anyone know where this is? I googled, but I just can't keep looking at the d*mn sites...if someone has it saved, I'd appreciate the link.

Hi all,
So, my sockapaloooza pal has a preference for vintage style calf-length socks (I'd better start today, the way I knit!) and said that anything with "brazil" in a yarn's name makes her run away. I don't quite get that last comment, but she has another language besides English as her first, so maybe it doesn't translate? Also, she can't wear artificial fibers...any suggestions on a yarn? I wouldn't mind using something a little thicker than the koigu so I can finish before the May deadline!

I went to look at the Sew Fast Sew Easy site tonight. In their "Stitch and Bitch Cafe" Forum, they have started a SnB group section. They have recently sent out invitations state-by-state, to please come and start an SnB group on their site (it's actually very creepy). These people instigate the destruction of all the SnB groups on Yahoo and then have the NERVE to say come and join US! Do these people think because we knit, we are sheep? Sew Fast Sew Easy can you say, "out of touch with reality".

well, here it is! a jaywalker -- the first of a pair. and, yes it fits! as the saying goes -- the third time is a charm.

i started this on tuesday evening at "snb" and finished it yesterday afternoon -- sort of. the only thing left to do is the toe. the pattern calls for a kitchener stitch to finish but, i don't get that. i've tried before but, it doesn't work for me. so, i've put the last 14 stitches on a stitch holder in the hopes that one of you can show me how to do this type of bind-off. if not, i will be stick with what i know and bind-off the good old fashion way.

i would have modeled them but, i'm still in pj's and the legs are a bit ashy! i didn't want to put you through that.

have a great weekend. traveling tuesday but, i'm hoping to be there the next -- it was fun.

Thanks for all the support guys - it means a ton.

Of course, after posting about my progress with Jaywalker I decided that I should actually try the thing on and it was too small! Gah! I started the ribbing over again last night, this time casting on for the larger size. I told Wes that we needed to drive to Farmington and back again so that I could catch up - the car is the only time i seem to get good chunks of knitting time anymore.
Hopefully I will be there on Tuesday - I know, I say that every week, but I really mean it this time!

what a great group! after about a year of being a "lurker", i finally attended my first "snb" gathering last night and it was quite fun. thanks to everyone for making me feel so welcomed. i really enjoyed myself and i look forward to visiting again -- when not travelling.

It seems the world is doing it's damnedest to keep me from the SnB! I really wanted to be there guys. Unfortunately I just got back from a last minute trip to Farmington due to the sudden death of my grandmother.

We are all doing okay - it was completely unexpected, but for the best. She has been flirting with alcoholism and dementia for the last year or so - her soul will be much happier where she is.

I will do my best to be there next week, and I actually compleated the heel turn on my first jaywalker on the drive back this afternoon.

So after my galloping start on my jaywalkers, I've come to a screeching halt. I've never knit socks before and I don't understand the heel turning instructions at all. Knit to within 1 st of the gap? Does this mean the gap between dpns, or the gap between where I turned on the last row and the stitches I didn't knit on the last row becasue I turned, or the store, or what? And also, "within 1 st" means, stop when there's 1 st left BEFORE the gap, right? So I'm narrowing the number of stitches each time? Then what does it mean, "until all heel stitches are worked"? I guess I'll take a leap of faith based on my own interpretation and if I'm wrong, then I can frog it up Team Jaywalkoholic style... or I'll just wait and see if anybody corrects me.

Do you like how I've appointed myself? This blog is great idea. Thanks for doing it, Jamie, but do you think we could have a problem with the name? I do family law and not intellectual property but if we get sued over the name, I have a colleague in Santa Fe who specializes in intellectual property and art law. Ill call her and she'll fix us right up -- for a handsome retainer, of course! =)

I made some good progress on my jaywalkers the other night listening to old podcasts of KnitCast. Maybe this group's next step should be a podcast live from Albuquerque -- we love wool, even in the desert. But alas, all my progress on my jaywalkers had to be sacrificed. I thought I was getting gauge on size 2's but the socks were too big. So I've gone back down to 1's. Also, she does not call for using a smaller needle for the ribbing and I think the ribbing is too loose for me on the same size needle. So I've actually casted on my 76 sts on size 0's!

Now, if you'll indulge me, I'll leave you with a photo. This is because I just got my camera software loaded onto my new laptop, I transferred over 300 photos last night, and I've never uploaded a photo directly to a blog before!

heel flaps for dummies, jaywalker style

(My jaywalker, on my ankle, on the bathroom counter because it's the only room with good enough lighting to take decent pictures with my camera phone, because I don't have a digital camera.)
Okay, I'm down to the heel flap, and the directions say k21 on needle 1 (so that's all the sts on needle 1), turn, sl1 and then p41. I was sitting here thinking, "but that will leave me with 1 stitch on needle 4! What should I do? Should I just slip that onto needle 3 to keep it out of the way? That'll be so confusing!"
And then I remembered the slipped stitch BEFORE the p41, which when added to the 41 makes 42 (keep up with me here), which accounts for all stitches on needles 1 and 4 and there is no problem. ...I think I should take a break now because this is clearly too much for me.

ouch! i still haven't started my jaywalkers. i have one #2 addi which i purchased at village wool but, they didn't have a second. so, i ordered another from knitpicks on monday or tuesday but, they haven't arrived as of yet. i went with the free delivery. maybe should have spent the extra money to get them here sooner. oh well. i was hoping to start them this weekend and maybe catch up with everyone.

i want to keep up. by the way, has anyone seen cara's blog, january one, she mentioned today the albuquerque snb group and how 7 members all casted on for jaywalker together. look you all are little celebrities -- smile!

I'm thinking that our group should choose a charity project to do this year. I know we all have a lot going on right now with Olympic knitting and school but perhaps we could join up with the other two knitting groups and set a date out in the future to do something? Let's get some ideas together and I'll go over to the other two group Abq. leaders and see what they think.

I think I might actually participate in the Knitting Olympics, I wasn't sure before. Maybe this will give me the boost I need to finish le clap? The rules say you have to cast on in February so maybe I'll join Margene's process knitting olympics instead.

needing to switch needles for Jaywalkers get these. Franzie said it's what she uses and she is the Sock Goddess! Susan Bates Sock Set for 10 bucks. You actually get 5 of 5 different sizes from 000's - 2.25's. It's a great deal. I'm off to switch mine off of the awful bamboo 1's I have. Blech!

**Edited to add - OMG! I can't believe how much easier it is to knit on these needles. It's like working with Addi Turbos! Sooooooo much happier!**

I am here... My Jaywalkers aren't turning out like I want... I am using size 1's on Opal Rainforest but when I did a try on, they are going to be loose... I am heading over to Village Wools after work to get some size 0 needles and send the sock to the frog pond....

Totally non-knitting-related: So I don't have a blog, and when I went to create an account just now, I signed in with my usual boring username, myfirstnamemylastname, and guess what? It was taken! I have pretty unusual last name (in fact the only people I know with my last name are my parents and sisters--no cousins, nothing!) and a pretty unusual spelling for my first name, so I'm pretty curious about this other me...

Okay, now knitting-related: I cast on my Jaywalkers Sunday night and have four inches done so far. My previous attempt at socks was so boring my attention wandered and I ended up naming all my toes, but the zigzag pattern is interesting enough to hold my attention while still being simple enough not to get lost. Yay for self-striping yarn!

I missed you guys on Tuesday! I'm off to Google myself now. (Hee. Sounds dirty.)

Edit: oh yeah, I was working on my jaywalkers at work yesterday, and one of my male coworkers was like, "Is that like knitting?" I said, "no, it's not like knitting, it is knitting." He said, apparently confused by my bamboo dpns, "...but like, with sticks?"
